WHOM DO WE TRUST?
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
But we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7—NIV)
In today terms we may say, “Some trust in missiles, some in tanks, or airplanes, but we trust in the name of the Lord. Why did the writer of the Psalm did not trust in chariots and in horses, but he trusted in the name of the Lord? That is because
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverb 18:10)
In other word, those who trust the Lord are safe in Him. Nothing can protect us from any disasters or any crisis than the name of the Lord.
Presently many people trust so much their political leaders, put their hope in those leaders, and expect a lot from the ones in power. They do not realize that leaders are human, and as such are subject to errors. If we have great expectation in our leaders, we may be disappointed when they fail. Should we trust our political leaders? Of course we should, but at the same time we should not expect so much from them.
As citizens, what can we do regarding political matters?
First, we must trust in the name of the Lord, not any political leaders because He has control over man’s history.
Second, we must submit ourselves to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established (Romans 13:1). The Lord puts the governing responsibility over the shoulder of our leaders.
Is there a conflict between God’s will and human will? Yes, there is when a person does not have a close relationship with the Lord, he likely makes decision based on his own wisdom.
Therefore, a citizen must pray for his political leaders for wisdom and insights that will enable them to rule to the best interest of the majority of his citizens, and to follow as close to God’s will as possible.
